Fred Morris offers our portfolio companies experienced guidance on accelerating growth in the midst of fast-paced change. With more than 35 years of involvement in expansion issues from an investor, lender, and executive point-of-view, Fred supports entrepreneurs by helping them build effective sales organizations and navigate complex management and financial decisions.
Fred developed his distinctive leadership perspective through a career in commercial banking as well as service in the U.S. Navy. Following graduation from Yale with a degree in economics, he joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps during the Vietnam War and quickly earned “Officer of the Deck” certification and Lieutenant ranking.
Upon completing his Navy service, he earned an MBA with a concentration in finance from Harvard Business School and entered banking, where he established a reputation for leading high-growth commercial lending units at the Northeast’s leading institutions. His business development success at First National City Bank (now Citibank) and U.S. Trust Company in New York caught the attention of Boston’s State Street Bank & Trust Company in 1978. There, as a Senior Vice President and member of the Management Committee, he formed a specialized lending division with a focus on media/cash flow lending. He rapidly grew the division to $500 million, including a number of mezzanine investments. He then focused on new ventures within State Street, eventually directing all new product development.
In his role as partner, Fred’s experience in hiring and managing sales organizations with the capability to drive rapid growth creates value for entrepreneurs, their boards, and our investors. He has served in board roles for more than a dozen portfolio companies, with current Director positions at Atlas Watersystems, Inc.; Bioscan, Inc.; HistoRx, Inc., Laser Production Technologies, Inc.; Verge Solutions, LLC; PointCare Technologies, Inc.; Security Innovations, Inc.; and Telematch, Inc. He applies his expertise as an active member of their compensation, audit, sales and marketing committees.
Although raised on Long Island, Fred’s New England roots trace back to his education at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH. He currently serves in leadership roles at several organizations that foster the region’s economic growth: he is a Director on the board of Boston’s North Shore Technology Council, the North Shore Innoventure Center, and the Connecticut Venture Group.
